In an ideal world, everyone would have full, prompt access to diagnosis and treatment as a matter of course without paying a penny. But as we don’t live in an ideal world, we’re the next best thing.
How does Benenden Healthcare work?
We work alongside the NHS, so if it’s unable to meet your needs, we step in and let you know what help we can offer. That gives you a safety net you might not otherwise have.
Access the help you need, when you need it most
We’re committed to providing the highest standard of service we can to all our members, and it’s our mutual ethos which means that we put our members at the heart of everything we do. When it comes to accessing our services, we trust you to use your judgement in deciding whether your health problems can be resolved by the NHS or other means. Because we’re not medical insurers, there are times where we might not be able to guarantee services, but we will usually endeavour to help you find the help you need if we can’t provide it ourselves. Our services are considered based on your needs and available Society resources; this is described as ‘discretionary’. In addition, you do not pay insurance premium tax on contributions.
Treatment for tuberculosis is provided on a non-discretionary basis.
All other services are provided at the discretion of the Society. Members must discuss their needs with us and receive written authorisation in advance, before you can arrange or obtain any services that you wish the Society to support.
Overseas members
If you’re currently not a resident in the UK, the services you are entitled to will be restricted to Information Services:
- GP 24/7 telephone advice line
- 24/7 Stress counselling helpline
- Long term care advice line
- The health concern advice line
Once you return to the UK to live, you will need to be registered with a UK GP and test the NHS before requesting consultation, physiotherapy or treatment services.
