Teenager Daniel Triffitt is proof that even with asthma, it is possible to achieve anything.
Despite being diagnosed with the condition as a toddler, the 14-year-old went on to become a competitive swimmer for Cheshire and the North West region, with a stack of medals to his name. In addition, he is a keen footballer and has taken part in karate and gymnastics.
Daniel’s mother Hilda began noticing symptoms when Daniel was just 18 months old. “He was very wheezy and coughing a lot. Between the ages of two and seven, he was really bad. He used to end up in hospital, usually once a week on a Friday night, with an asthma attack.”
From the age of five, Daniel began to take up swimming. He says: “Swimming helped me to build up my stamina and opened up my airways. It made me feel a lot better.”
Daniel’s asthma continues to be well under control and he uses inhalers every morning and in the evening. He says:
“I would say to other children with asthma, just keep doing what you enjoy. Work on your breathing and it will get better. Don’t let asthma hold you back.”
