Five great ways to feel happy and relaxed back at home
If you’ve ever experienced that post-holiday slump on returning to your everyday routine, then a few of our suggestions may put a spring back in your step.
1. Make an activity plan
Think about what you really enjoyed doing on holiday. Was it a brisk walk before breakfast? An energetic game of beachball with the kids? See if you can build some of these fun activities into your week, such as taking a walk at lunchtime or having a kick-about in the park at the weekend. Exercise is a sure way to lift your mood, as it releases feel-good endorphins in the brain
2. Relive relaxing moments
Your sense of smell can be highly evocative. Try taking a scented aftersun or body butter with you on holiday, say, and then continue using it at home. It’ll keep your skin moisturised — while hopefully conjuring up memories of rest and relaxation at the same time
3. Expand your horizons
If you got a kick from trying something new while you were away, such as mountain biking or snorkelling, find out about opportunities to take it up at home. You might find an off-road cycle route nearby or a local sub-aqua club, for example
4. Eat well
Many of us tickle our taste buds with regional delicacies on holiday. If you’ve fallen in love with a particular cheese, exotic spice or local fruit in season, why not take some back home with you — luggage space (and customs regulations) permitting? Otherwise ask your local delicatessen or greengrocer to recommend something similar. Varying what you eat at mealtimes can help you achieve a healthy, balanced diet
5. Look after yourself
Once you’re back from holiday, keep an eye on your general health. If you have an insect bite that hasn’t healed or a mole that’s changed shape, speak to a pharmacist or your GP. It’s also important to finish any courses of medication that you might be taking. Most types of anti-malaria tablets, for example, need to be taken for four weeks after you return to cover the disease’s incubation period.
