Over 100 years of healthcare provision
Benenden Healthcare is proud of its history. Established over 100 years ago as a society to assist post office workers suffering from tuberculosis, we have grown into a modern and progressive healthcare company, providing discretionary healthcare services for members of the public sector and other approved organisations.
Our legacy stems from one man, Charles Garland, who had the idea to create a mutual self-help organisation in which everyone would contribute a small weekly amount to a fund. The fund would be used to help their colleagues or themselves if they were unlucky enough to suffer from TB. In 1923 he called the organisation The Post Office Sanatorium Society.
In 1997 the Society was renamed as The Benenden Healthcare Society.
How Benenden Healthcare has changed
The Society has changed a lot since its early days as the National Association for the Establishment and Maintenance of Sanatoria for Workers Suffering from Tuberculosis Friendly Society. Whilst our principle of mutuality is still observed - we offer members access to discretionary healthcare services for one flat rate of £1.50 per person, per week - we are constantly reviewing and developing the services we offer to ensure that we provide access to those which are the most relevant and sought-after.
Benenden Healthcare is helping to challenge the provision of healthcare today by offering an affordable alternative to private medical insurance, ensuring that those who need supplementary healthcare have access to it when they need it most.
Specialist healthcare for public sector workers and others
Our eligibility remains true to our history – we offer first class healthcare services to public sector workers, as well employees of other approved organisations and their families. By continuing to observe this principle of tailored healthcare we strive to supply excellent healthcare to a specific market and remain true to the ethos of Charles Garland – our founder.
