Benenden Hospital is celebrating the seal of approval from its patients. Over 99 per cent of patients responding to a recent survey have said their treatment was either ‘excellent’ or ‘very good’.
Patients were asked detailed questions on their care, staff attitudes, hygiene, food and accommodation, and the responses analysed by an independent research company.
The results showed an exceptional level of patient satisfaction, with the research company saying that these are the best results ever seen, that they are “quite simply, as good as it gets” and that it reinforces Benenden’s position as one of the few hospitals in the UK to ‘consistently exceed their patients’ expectations.”
Comments from patients included : “Benenden Hospital flies the flag for high standard healthcare”; “Every visit from start to finish of my treatment was perfect”; “Nursing as it should be” and “A wonderful jewel in the crown”.
Satisfaction levels on the number of points, including the questions ‘were you treated with respect and dignity’; ‘the cleanliness of the ward’; ‘was your treatment explained’ and ‘overall impression of accommodation’ were rated 100%.
The standard of nursing care, cleanliness of the wards, standard of accommodation and friendliness of the staff were particularly singled out for praise.
Hospital director Jane Abbott says that she is delighted with the results. “We take patient care extremely seriously and work very hard to make each patient’s time with us a pleasant as possible,” she said. “All our staff are dedicated to providing excellent care and it is very gratifying to know that we are doing it right.
“We have modern matrons to ensure that the levels of cleanliness and standard of care are maintained and have recently invested over £2million in new, single room accommodation, upgraded theatres, comfortable beds and new imaging equipment.
“These results are a great boost to us and we thank our patients for their vote of confidence.”

Benenden Healthcare Society
Benenden Healthcare is a mutual & not for profit; Friendly Society, run for members. As a mutual organisation, not a medical insurer, members club together so that they can get the first class medical help they need, when they need it most.
Benenden Healthcare is one of the UK’s longest serving and most respected mutual healthcare societies. The Society has a membership of over 940,000 and is currently open to all public sector workers and their families as well as employees of organisations whose aims and objectives are compatible with the Society.
Benenden Hospital
Benenden Hospital was founded in 1907 and became the centre for hospital treatment for members of Trade Unions and Friendly Societies and subsequently large numbers of public sector employees who joined what is now the Benenden Healthcare Society. The Society has a membership of over 940,000.
In recent years the hospital has increasingly been able to provide services for patients who are not members of the Benenden Healthcare Society. Local National Health Services are increasing their use of the Hospital’s facilities as are patients who wish to use private medical insurance or who wish to pay directly for their own hospital care.
The hospital places great emphasis on quality providing comfortable, clean and hygienic accommodation and a range of clinical services which are tailored to meet the needs of individual patients. The hospital has a Matron – a senior and experienced professional – who has the authority to resolve problems and to make sure the patient pathway is both effective and patient friendly. The hospital recently scooped six out of 12 of the Healthcare 100 Awards for best employer accolades.
